Relations between Ukraine and the Kingdom of Thailand

Recognition of Ukraine:  December 26, 1991.

Establishment of Diplomatic Relations: May 6, 1992.

Political Relations

The only visit at the highest level in the history since the establishment of diplomatic relations was held in 2004, as the President of Ukraine H.E. Mr. L.Kuchma paid an official visit to the Kingdom of Thailand on March 9-11, 2004. It should be noted that the King of Thailand His Majesty Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua in the capacity of Crown Prince of Thailand visited Ukraine in 1989.

2009 – first round of political consultations between the MFA of Ukraine and the MFA of Thailand at the level of Deputy Foreign Ministers (Kyiv, Ukraine).

2011 – meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and Thailand in the course of the 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly (New York, USA).

2016 - meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and Thailand within the framework of the Fifth Ministerial Meeting of Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (Beijing, China).

2017 – first ever official visit of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine to Thailand (Bangkok, Thailand).

2019 – second round of political consultations between the MFA of Ukraine and the MFA of Thailand at the level of Directors General (Kyiv, Ukraine).

2022 – third round of political consultations between the MFA of Ukraine and the MFA of Thailand at the level of Directors General (online).

2022 – meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and Thailand within the framework of ASEAN summits (Phnom Penh, Cambodia).


Science and Technology Cooperation 

In 2008 the first Earth observation satellite of Thailand “THEOS” was successfully launched by Ukrainian “Dnipro” rocket to the Earth orbit.

On November 1, 2023 the State Space Agency of Ukraine (SSAU) and the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency of the Kingdom of Thailand (GISTDA) signed the Memorandum of Understanding regarding cooperation in the field of peaceful use of space. The document officially established relations between the two agencies, as well as defined their framework and core cooperation areas, aiming at further development and strengthening of the mutually beneficial cooperation in the space sphere.


Cultural and Humanitarian Cooperation 

Ukrainian cultural and arts events have been regularly held in Thailand. Participating Ukrainian artists promote positive image of Ukraine.

Exhibitions of paintings of well-known Ukrainian artists like Ivan Marchuk, Maria Prymachenko, Oleg Shupliak, Tetiana Cherevan, Oleksii Chebykin, Marta Pitchuk and others were organized in Bangkok.

As part of the implementation of the initiative of the First Lady of Ukraine, Mrs. Olena Zelenska, in May 2022, a Ukrainian audio guide has been launched in the iconic museum "Siam" in Bangkok.

On June 21, 2022 at the premises of Bangkok Art and Culture Centre took place a grand opening of the art&photo exhibition “Ukraine is the Cradle of Heroes. The Embassy of Ukraine in the Kingdom of Thailand presented the works of three authors. A part of the exhibition was devoted to the defenders of the city of Mariupol, the fighters of the "Azov" regiment. Most of the exhibition photos were taken by Dmytro Kozatskyi, the de facto press secretary of the regiment and his comrades.

On August 25 and September 4, 2022, on the occasion of the 31st anniversary of Ukraine's Independence, the Embassy together with Chulalongkorn University, the Documentary Club and the Thai Film Archive organized two screenings of the Ukrainian documentary film "Train "Kyiv - War".

In the framework of the 21st International Bangkok Book Fair (March 30 - April 9) 2023 was demonstrated the exhibition "Postcards from Ukraine" and presented the book (in Thai) "The Gates of Europe. A History of Ukraine", written by professor and history teacher of Harvard University Serhii Plokhy.

The Embassy of Ukraine in the Kingdom of Thailand in cooperation with the Yamaha Music Academy, hold a charity concert "Melody for Ukraine" on September 15, 2023. The program included performances of Ukrainian songs and music works of the national composers. Performers from the Bangkok Chopin Society, Mahidol and Rangsit Universities, as well as the youngest representatives of the Ukrainian community in Thailand, participated in the concert.

On February 28, 2024, as to mark the second anniversary of the beginning of the Russian full-scale military aggression against Ukraine, the Embassy of Ukraine organized a commemorative event for foreign diplomats, Thai officials, academic circles, and Ukrainian community. The event included a photo exhibition and a screening of the documentary within the framework of the project "Culture VS War. Akhtem Seitablaiev", and followed by the protagonist’s online address to the audience as well as a panel discussion on the topic “Ukrainian Resilience: A Commemoration of Two Years of Struggle and Strength”.

Throughout 2023-2024, the Embassy facilitated screenings of Ukrainian films such as "Ivan Syla" (Chulalongkorn University), "Mavka. The Forest Song" (3rd European Film Festival in the Lao People's Democratic Republic), Evgeny Afineevsky's documentary "Freedom on Fire: Ukraine's Fight for Freedom" (European Film Festival in Bangkok), the films "Olga" and "Anna" (La Francophonie Thailand festival), the war drama by director Zaza Buadze "Mother of Apostles" (European Film Festival Cambodia), and the Oscar-winning documentary by Mstyslav Chernov "20 Days in Mariupol" (European Film Festival in Bangkok).


Legal basis 

Legal basis of the Ukrainian-Thai relations consists of 19 documents.

Key Agreements:

Agreement between the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand on establishment of Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Bilateral Cooperation (2002);

Trade Agreement between the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand and the Government of Ukraine (2017).

Ukrainian diaspora

There are no public organizations or associations which unite Ukrainians in Thailand. There are about 4 thousand Ukrainian citizens who stay in Thailand.
